What We're About

Before telephones, telegraphs or an efficient postal service, coffeehouses brought people face to face in conversation, and coffee stimulated debate. They were great social levellers, open to all and indifferent to social status.

Cafe Rhythm is a venue for dialogue, political debate, social criticism and just plain socializing. Please come on out and see why we consider ourselves to be Cannington's gathering place and healthy antidote to the latest crop of production-line coffee 'outlets'.

Homegrown - supporting the local economy.

Lake Simcoe

All effort is made to buy our products from small local businesses and farms with an emphasis on organic and natural foods. The aim is to offer local, high quality, fresh, homemade foods at a price the rest of us can afford.

The concept of buying local is simply to buy food (or any good or service) produced, grown, or raised as close to you as possible. Buying your food locally is good for the local economy, good for family farmers, good for your family's health, and good for the environment.

Choosing fair trade organic coffee and teas.

TransFair Canada

Fairtrade standards have a social welfare goal and are primarily designed to ensure that disadvantaged producers in the third world can gain more control over their lives.

Organic standards define the method of production. It embraces a 'whole system' approach which address many environmental issues. Further, organic principles have always recognised the importance of the social and ethical aspects of production.

Local purveyors of
live music.

Lazy Devils

Coffee houses have been a haven and breeding ground for songwriters and performers throughout the history of contemporary music. It's one of the best environments to hear local and traveling musicians. We continue in this tradition by presenting the best live music in the area.

We also have Panini’s on our menu, so come out and be one of the first to try these grilled sandwiches.

New Tastes, New Cafe..

If you haven’t been in recently, you’re in for a pleasent surprise.

Renovations are done. New name solidly in place (with signage to follow shortly). New menu circulating. And new chef on board!

Simon is the newest member to the co-op, and its key ingredient. With years of restaurant experience and finely tuned taste buds, he’s taken on the role of full time chef. And he’s amazing at it. Our daily specials now include ‘Breakfast Special(s)’ and ‘Lunch Special(s)’, with tantalizing items such as Huevos Rancheros – an open faced Mexican breakfast on tortilla, with refried beans, hash brown potatoes, 2 over medium eggs, fresh homemade salsa, melted Cheddar and Jack cheese and finally topped off with homemade guacamole and sour cream.

After an evening of taste testing yesterday, we will be updating the menu yet again with new items. Come in, say hi, and enjoy the new Co-op Cafe experience.

Cannington on The Art of Transition

Last year, local Bernard Leroux did a video piece on our town and the Cafe for Durham Tourism. This was of course before we changed over to Cameron Street Co-op. There is also a nice segment on one of our now Co-op memebers and long time local artist, David Marshak, and his take on the cafe’s role in Cannington. Check it out!

Out ‘n’ about @ mingling mommas & mocktails

Mingling… check!

mommas….. check!

Mocktails… double check!

Last Thursday the Cameron Street Cafe Co-op participated in the first annual “Mingling Mommas and Mocktails” event at the Uxbridge Music Hall. Kiki, Sarah and Kelly packed up our delicious coffee and teas, our irresistible homemade cookies, veggie cups, yummy butter-tarts and fresh chicken wraps and headed straight to Uxbridge! It was a good thing all the mommas came to the event thirsty and hungry.

The evening consisted of social gathering and a diverse selection of businesses with items and services for sale. We really enjoyed the company of Nicole Scott and the information she shared with us about her business and the benefits of raw vegetables. We also met Kathy who re-energized us with her healing energy and her amethyst mat. Needles to say we had a great time mingling with the other vendors and making sure all the mommas had mocktails in their hands.

Panini Press

Well, we’ve finally got a panini press! With other new additions like our gas range stove, our coffee brewer and new range hood fan, we’ve stepped up our game. Stay tuned for new menu additions over the next couple of months! The panini press will be put to use shortly, be patient… it will be well worth the wait!

Welcome to the Co-op Cafe

Cafe Rhythm n’ Books/Cameron Street Co-op,  just celebrated its fourth anniversary this past weekend! Rob Szabo came out to help us celebrate with an awesome performance Saturday night. His sweet tunes and sense of humour played well for the packed audience… which flowed into the new space (previously known as ‘the book room’). The Cafe also generously donated a copy of Rob’s latest album to every one there! Thank-you Cafe! This anniversary was also the launch of our new face lift, with renovations completed only weeks ago. The renovations, which boasts a bar counter and an additional three tables, were well received! Our new signs will be up shortly as well, as Cameron Street Co-op Cafe. Stay tuned for other new changes in the coming weeks, including new menu items!
